What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?

Don't force anything... The subject should allow themselves to relax and enjoy the process. The beauty and "art of the image" is already there organically; it's just a balance of perfect light, form, composition and expression. When these various elements meet at the right moment, THAT is when a great photograph is born.

 

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

What is the ultimate vision for this photo session?  What is the purpose of doing this shoot?  What emotional reaction do you want to invoke from the viewer with your photographs?

 

What do you love most about your job?  

I enjoy lifting people's spirits. Seeing the true beauty in them, or their family, or their love, and translating that honesty of emotion through the lens. The ultimate joy is when my clients see their final images or their videos and they finally realize how truly amazing they are.

 

What inspired you to start your own business?

I have always been a visual and artistic person. Since I was a pre-teen I took a film photography class at High School. I became a journalist for my School paper (and in College). I started acting and directing professionally then went to graduate school and received my masters in Fine Art. While working as a waitress and aspiring actress in Los Angeles, I began taking headshots for all my friends that were low on money.  Like wildfire, everyone started getting agents and booking acting jobs, including me!  I began taking so many photos that I didn't have time to work as a waitress anymore, which is fine by me, because I was terrible at it!
